Congratulations on being attuned to Reiki or exploring this powerful energy healing technique! As you embark on this journey, one of the essential elements you will come across are Reiki symbols. These powerful symbols can help you access greater inner peace, clarity, and self-connection. They assist in healing and moving energy for personal growth and transformation in your life.

If you're feeling stuck, worried, or lost in life, Reiki symbols can help you find the serenity and meaning you're seeking. They can reconnect you with your inner guidance, promote healing, and provide the calm and stability necessary to navigate life with grace. Incorporating these symbols into your daily routine or spiritual practice can illuminate the path towards a more balanced, harmonious, and fulfilling life.

Now let’s dive deeper into what Reiki symbols are, how they work, and their significance in Reiki sessions.

What are Reiki Symbols?

Four major Usui Reiki symbols etched in stone

Reiki symbols are sacred and powerful images used by Reiki practitioners to manifest specific outcomes or energies. During a Reiki session, these symbols are often drawn, visualized, or meditated on to help channel the flow of universal life force energy and elevate overall well-being.

The symbols are used to represent their meaning, much like how a heart symbol is used to represent love, or a peace symbol to represent peace. The symbol by itself has no significance without the connected meaning. As you gain a deeper understanding of the symbols' meaning, they can assist you in your practice.

Each symbol allows you to tap into a different aspect of universal energy and channel it for intentional healing. The clearer your intention, the clearer the pathway to healing.

To activate the symbols once attuned, begin by connecting to Reiki. Then, either draw the symbols with your hand in the air or visualize them while repeating their mantra three times. Hold the intention in your mind as you direct and allow the energy to flow.

The History of Reiki Symbols

The origins of Reiki can be traced back to Japan, where Mikao Usui developed the Usui Reiki system in the early 1900s. The practice emphasized the transfer of energy from one person to another through touch, promoting physical healing and emotional balance.

As the practice became popular, Usui introduced the use of symbols to help enhance the flow of energy and promote distant healing. The Reiki symbols became an essential part of the practice. They were initially kept secret within the realm of Reiki masters who passed them down to their students.

Although the symbols were eventually introduced to the general public, it is important to note that a person should still be attuned to Reiki to properly use them. These symbols are potent tools that can enhance the flow of energy, but they need to be used by attuned practitioners to be effective.

As a result of the manner in which the symbols and teachings were passed down, there may be slight differences in the way each symbol is drawn. However, it's more about the intention behind the symbols rather than the specifics of their drawing. Focus on the intention, and the energy will follow.

Usui Reiki Symbols

The Usui Reiki system includes four symbols: the Power Symbol, the Harmony Symbol, the Distance or Connection Symbol, and the Master Symbol. While there are many Reiki symbols, we will focus on the foundational three Usui Reiki symbols in this article. These symbols cover a lot of ground and are the ones you will be introduced to upon completing Reiki level 2.

It's important not to get overwhelmed by the many symbols and variations of Reiki. Instead, focus on the foundational symbols and develop a deeper understanding of their meanings. Remember that these symbols are just tools, and the power is within the intention and connection behind them. Narrowing your focus and starting with the foundational symbols can help you gain a faster and greater understanding of the concept and implement it into your practice.

Similar to the chakra system, which originated in India, the traditional Japanese energy system was focused on three main points, versus the seven main chakra points. In Japanese, these are referred to as the Tanden points, and each of the three foundational Usui Reiki symbols is tied to one of these Tanden points:

  • The lower Tanden is located at the sacral chakra point. It’s connected to the level of form and ties to the Power symbol.
  • The middle Tanden is located at the heart chakra point. It’s connected to the idea of oneness and ties to the Connection or Distance symbol.
  • The upper Tanden is located at the third eye chakra point. It’s connected to the level of spirit and ties to the Harmony Symbol.

Now let’s cover each symbol in a little more detail.

The Power Symbol

Drawing of Cho Ku Rei Reiki Symbol, or Power Symbol.

The Power Symbol, known as the Cho Ku Rei symbol, is the first symbol taught during Level 2 Reiki training. This symbol is drawn in just three strokes and functions to increase the power and focus of the Reiki energy.

Think of it as a light switch that turns on and shines a light that directs the energy to specific areas or issues. The way the symbol is drawn is beautifully connected to this meaning as it directs the energy to a point and spirals into a focus, bringing the power "here".

It's tied to the lower Tanden point, or level of form, and is associated with the lower three chakras. This connection with the level of form also informs its use for physical and material issues and healing.

Some teachers suggest drawing the Cho ku Rei symbol counterclockwise, while others suggest drawing it clockwise. Ultimately, the choice of direction is up to the practitioner and what feels most comfortable to them. It's important not to get too hung up on these specifics. As a beginner, I wasted a lot of time worrying about the direction and different ways some of the same symbols were drawn and don't want you to do the same. Feel free to use the method that resonates with you and your practice.

Everyday Uses of the Power Symbol

One of the most common ways to use the Power Symbol is by activating it at the beginning of your Reiki practice to connect with the energy. You can also use it at the end of your practice to seal in the energy and “turn off the light”. Additionally, the Cho ku Rei symbol is an excellent tool for space clearing, and you can use it on the corners of a room.

Moreover, the Power Symbol can be used on inanimate objects such as food, medication, your car or phone, or any physical or material item. It can also help with strengthening, cleansing, and grounding oneself.

The Power Symbol is also useful for physical issues and pain. If you're experiencing discomfort, you can lay your hands on the points of concern and activate the symbol until the pain subsides. I frequently have lower back pain and it’s become second nature to lay my hands on my back for 10 minutes or so to alleviate the pain.

Furthermore, the Cho ku Rei symbol can be used to power manifestations. You can write down your intentions and draw the symbol on paper to enhance the manifestation process.

In summary, the Power Symbol is a versatile tool that can be used in various ways to promote physical healing, cleanse negative energy, and promote protection and personal empowerment. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced practitioner, this symbol is an essential part of your Reiki practice.

The Harmony Symbol

Drawing of Sei He Ki Reiki Symbol, or Harmony Symbol

The next symbol you will learn is the Harmony Symbol, known as the Sei He Ki symbol. This symbol is used to bring emotional balance, peace, and harmony. Its function in purifying and restoring emotional and spiritual equilibrium is powerful. Additionally, it helps balance the left and right brain hemispheres, release resentment, and cut energetic ties.

The Harmony Symbol is tied to the upper Tanden point, or level of spirit, and is associated with the upper three chakras. Its connection with the level of spirit informs its use in increasing intuition and connection to spirit, along with healing on the mental and emotional level.

Everyday Uses of the Harmony Symbol

Incorporating the Harmony Symbol into your Reiki practice can help you find greater emotional balance, peace, and harmony. By using this symbol, you can purify residual energies, release negative emotions, and connect with your higher self to achieve a greater sense of inner peace and meaning in your life.

The Harmony Symbol can help you clear creativity blocks, soothe emotional distress, heal past traumas, and facilitate forgiveness. It's a powerful tool that can help you let go of past hurts, allowing you to forgive yourself and others and move forward in life.

If you're struggling with relationship issues or communication problems, the Harmony Symbol can help. You can connect with Reiki and draw the Sei He Ki symbol before having a difficult conversation. Or use it with a self-treatment while holding the intention of sending Reiki for the highest good of the challenging situation. By addressing any emotional issues within yourself, you can indirectly improve your relationships as well. Supporting emotional openness is crucial in relating to others.

The Harmony Symbol is a powerful tool that can bring mental clarity and increase intuition and spiritual connection. By using this symbol, you can enhance your ability to access your higher self and connect with your intuition. This allows you to make better decisions and find greater peace and meaning in your life.

Additionally, the Harmony Symbol can be used to enhance the use of affirmations. You can write down your affirmations on paper and draw the symbol over them. Hold the paper between your hands and send Reiki with the intention of powering the affirmation.

Furthermore, the Harmony Symbol has the power to reach into the subconscious mind, making it an effective tool for healing bad habits and addictions. You can focus on the bad habit you want to change or the positive change you want to achieve, such as finding a new job or becoming a better version of yourself. See below for a technique to help with this.

Technique for Healing Bad Habits

Finger turning bad and good text on wooden blocks. Good and bad habit concept.

As someone who is prone to bad habits, I have found this technique to be incredibly helpful in supporting me on my journey towards positive change. Follow these steps to incorporate this technique into your self-practice:

1) Bring awareness to the challenge or habit you want to change.

2) Think about who you will be when you overcome this challenge. Why do you want to change this? Frame this in a positive way that doesn’t focus on the habit. For example, instead of saying, “I don’t need a drink to deal with stress,” say something like, “I am capable of sitting with my uncomfortable emotions.”

3) Concentrate on the affirmation you have come up with. You can do this by simply repeating it in your head.

4) Place one hand across your forehead and the other on the lower back of your head, just above your neck so it feels like you're cradling your skull. Leave your hands there and send Reiki with the Harmony Symbol.

5) After five minutes or so, release the hand on your forehead and leave the one at the back of your head. Let the affirmation go and allow it to sink in and start to take root in your being. Leave your hand there for as long as feels helpful.

6) Repeat this as often as you like and remember that manifestation takes time. It likely took a long time to create the bad habit, and it will take time to undo it. But with your desire to change and continued action, I have no doubt you will get there!

Incorporating this technique into your self-practice can help you let go of negative energy and invite positive change. By focusing on the positive change you want to achieve and using the Harmony Symbol to support your affirmation, you can cultivate greater inner peace and meaning in your life. Remember to be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.

The Distance Symbol

Lastly, let's dive into the Distance Symbol, also referred to as the Connection symbol—a priceless tool for Reiki practitioners. Known as Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, this symbol is meant for sending energy across long distances, allowing you to assist yourself and others regardless of their location.

The Distance Symbol is tied to the middle Tanden point, or state of oneness, and is associated with the heart chakra. Beyond its use for distance healing, it's used to heal disconnection and bring us back to the oneness and connection we all have. We are all just drops in the same ocean.

Everyday Uses of the Distance Symbol

As already mentioned, the Distance Symbol is an essential tool for Reiki practitioners who want to offer support to those who are not physically present. For instance, let's say a loved one is experiencing difficulties and they live in a different city or even country. With the use of this symbol, you can send Reiki at any time to them, no matter the distance.

But the uses of the Distance Symbol don't end there. This symbol is also particularly suited for inner-child work, helping you heal any past traumas and reconnect with your inner child. It's an excellent tool for using on yourself or others who have unresolved past issues, as it can help them process emotions and release negative energy.

Moreover, the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol can be used to send healing energy to Spirit Guides, whose role is to offer guidance and support. It can also be used to assist departed loved ones on their path to evolution.

By utilizing the Distance Symbol you can connect with your true self and others, realizing that we are all one. This symbol also helps with being present and in the now, and cuts through the illusion of time and space.

Remember, you can be creative with these symbols! This is just a taste of what’s available to you. There are many different techniques and ways to incorporate these into your daily life. Symbols need not be used individually, and you can use several at a time. There is no right or wrong way; what’s most important is what feels right for you.

So explore, tune in, and keep practicing! Your desired outcome is inevitable.

Reiki Self-Treatment Technique Incorporating All 3 Symbols

I learned this technique from Torsten Lange at the Reiki Academy and have found it to be very beneficial. Please note that this technique is intended for students who have been attuned to the three Reiki symbols and have completed Reiki level 2. It's a great way to deepen your connection to these symbols and experience healing on each level. This self-treatment takes about 15 minutes and is a quick and effective way to practice Reiki on yourself.

Here are the steps to follow:

1. Connect with Reiki. Set your intention and wait until you feel the connection.

2. Draw the Power Symbol in the air, repeat its mantra three times, and place your hands on the lower Tanden point (sacral chakra). Leave your hands there for about 5 minutes, more or less depending on how much time you have. You can repeat the mantra or visualize the symbol during this time, whatever feels right for you.

3. Next, repeat with the Connection symbol. Draw it in the air, repeat its mantra three times, and place your hands on the middle Tanden point (heart chakra). Leave your hands there for about 5 minutes.

4. Now repeat with the Harmony Symbol. Draw it in the air, repeat its mantra three times, and place your hands on the upper Tanden point (third eye). Leave your hands there for about 5 minutes.

5. Finally, take a moment to tune in and feel into your body. Be sure to ground yourself when complete.

This practice is an excellent way to connect with all these different aspects of yourself. It ties together your physical body healing. Then, helps you connect to love and a sense of oneness and connection with the universe. Finally, it supports working on your spiritual guidance and emotional well-being. Remember to trust your intuition and let the energy guide you during this practice.

Advanced Reiki Techniques and Symbols

You're on an incredible journey towards inner peace and self-discovery through the power of Reiki. As you progress on this path, you'll learn there is so much more to explore beyond the primary Reiki symbols. These symbols cover a lot of ground but that’s just the beginning of what’s available to you with symbols!

If you choose to advance in your Reiki practice, you may encounter Karuna Reiki, a system that introduces symbols like Zonar, Halu, Harth, Gnosa, Kriya, Iava, and Shanti. Each of these unique symbols plays a role in connecting with and healing various aspects of your life, allowing you to gain a deeper level of peace and understanding.

Another fascinating system to explore is Shamballa Reiki, which encompasses symbols like Mer Ka Fa Ka Lish Ma, Motor Zanon, and Amsui. As you embark on the path of Shamballa Reiki, you'll not only expand your energy healing abilities but also cultivate a stronger connection with your higher self and the world around you.

During your Reiki journey, you may come across other advanced techniques, such as Raku, a symbol used during the attunement process for grounding and energy balancing. Additionally, you'll learn to work with chakras and explore various meditation practices to enhance the flow of energy throughout your entire being.

Don't worry if this all seems overwhelming at first. As you walk this path, you'll find that the knowledge and skills you gain will come naturally as you deepen your connection to the healing energy of Reiki. Embrace the feeling of excitement. Trust that you are on a journey that will bring you greater inner peace and the tools you need to manifest a life filled with meaning and purpose.

The Effectiveness of Reiki Symbols

You may be wondering if the use of symbols really makes a difference in your Reiki practice. As someone who is open to the world of woo and spirituality, I still find myself doubting or questioning the effectiveness of certain practices. This is why I decided to become a Reiki Science Practitioner.

Torsten Lange, with the Reiki Academy, performed an experiment where he treated Swiss tap water with Reiki and measured its properties. He used each different symbol, and not only did each symbol increase the quality of the water, but each symbol did so in a different way. This experiment proved that using a different symbol creates a different energy and healing experience.

As a practitioner, I am able to share these images with you:

In short, the pictures of Reiki-tested water with symbols show formed crystals, which are a main indicator of water quality. The shape, size, and number of crystals can determine the quality of water. In general, 90-degree angles indicate lower quality, such as tap water, while 60-degree angles indicate a natural source. The absence of formed crystals in tap water and the presence of formed crystals in Reiki-treated water are one of the ways that show that the symbols have a positive effect on water quality.

Looking at these pictures eliminates my questioning mind and allows me to trust that the symbols are working as intended. They bring me confidence that what I'm doing is having an effect and is not a waste of my time. Wasting my most valuable resource on something that is ineffective is a great worry of mine, and these pictures bring me comfort. I share them in hopes that they help you as well.

In conclusion, the Usui Reiki Symbols are an essential part of the practice and can help enhance the flow of energy and promote healing. By learning these fundamentals, you now have powerful tools to help you in your Reiki journey.

Keep in mind that the symbols are just that, symbols, but they can be used to create a powerful intention behind them, making them a channel for universal energy to flow. Remember to find the symbols that resonate with you and use them with intention, and the results will follow.

With continued practice and awareness, you will connect with Reiki as a source of inner peace and meaning within your own life.
