The 5 Reiki principles are guiding principles that provide us with a roadmap to live more harmoniously and authentically. These principles were developed by Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, as a way to cultivate spiritual growth and foster inner peace. By incorporating these principles into your daily life, you can align yourself with your true self and experience a deeper sense of joy and fulfillment.
At first glance, it's easy to overlook the Reiki principles. but I believe that doing so is a great loss. I understand how you could disregard them - I used to feel the same way. As someone who has always had a hard time with authority and blindly following rules, they looked like just another set of rules to me. A way of shaming me into believing I was a bad person if I didn't follow them.
But here's the thing - the Reiki principles are not meant to be strict guidelines or laws that must be obeyed. Rather, they are suggestions to guide you towards a better life and helpful reminders to guide us into ourselves so we can live our best lives. While there are no consequences for not following them, it's important to note that negative experiences may manifest in your life. Bottom line, they are not here to shame you but to help you!
They may also appear to be very simple or obvious statements. Sure, you've heard these things before, but do you actually DO them? We think they're easy and so we don't even spend the time examining how they actually are showing up in our daily lives.
So, I urge you to give the Reiki principles a chance. The magic comes in when you're able to get past any initial reactions that these principles may trigger in you. When you can allow for the true understanding of their purpose and their meaning, they can truly transform your life and guide you on your path to a life of profound inner peace.
What Are Reiki Principles?

The Reiki principles are a set of five guidelines that were created by Mikao Usui, the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. These principles, also known as the Reiki precepts or Reiki Gokai, are at the core of his teachings and serve as a guide to living a balanced and harmonious life.
Each principle represents a powerful affirmation and a pathway to spiritual growth. The five Reiki principles are:
These principles can be used by anyone, whether or not you are a trained Reiki practitioner. They give you a framework to help bring awareness into your everyday life, increasing your vibrational level and leading to a greater sense of peace and ease.
It's important to note that the precepts were written in an old form of Japanese that is not a straightforward process to translate. Therefore, there are different interpretations of these principles. Some people prefer to use statements or affirmations with a positive tone, while others may choose to slightly change the wording in a way that works best for them.
Personally, I like them as they are listed here because I feel it doesn't deny what is present in me and allows what needs to be seen to rise to the surface as I say the mantra. Regardless of how you choose to phrase them, the Reiki principles serve as a powerful guide on our spiritual path, helping us live with balance and harmony in each moment of our lives.
The Healing Power of Reiki
Reiki energy is a powerful force that can help you heal on all levels. It releases blockages and negative emotions, promoting a sense of calm and well-being. Reiki can also reduce stress and promote relaxation, creating the optimal state for healing. This gentle and non-invasive technique can be used alongside conventional medicine.
The healing power of Reiki lies in its ability to tap into the universal energy that surrounds us all. However, we often block this energy with things like negative thoughts, emotions, environmental influences, and more. Reiki helps us release these blockages, allowing energy to flow freely and promote healing and balance. Reiki is versatile and can treat physical, emotional, and spiritual issues.
One story that stuck with me about the creation of the Reiki principles is that as Mikao Usui was healing people with Reiki, he noticed that they would keep coming back to him with the same problems. This is because our bodies will continue to create the same blockages until we clear the root or cause of them. Your brain has a message to tell you. Until you have full awareness of the signal it's attempting to send you, and you're ready to make a change based on the result of this awareness, your brain will continue to send the signal until you get it.
By encouraging others to be guided by these principles, it is said that Usui prevented them from creating the same blockages once they were treated. By following the five Reiki principles, you can increase your vibrational level and promote healing on all levels. Ultimately, the impact of Reiki on your well-being will depend on your willingness to embrace its principles and incorporate them into your daily life.
Reiki is powerful and can bring about healing and change on its own, but it also works best when the recipient is motivated to be a partner in their own healing. By being open to the healing power of Reiki and actively working to incorporate its principles into your life, you can experience profound transformation and a greater sense of well-being. Whether you are dealing with physical pain, emotional turmoil, or spiritual unrest, Reiki can help you find the peace and healing you need.
Benefits of Reiki Principles

Mikao Usui created Reiki as a path to help others achieve spiritual enlightenment, not just as a form of healing. The five Reiki principles are spiritual guidelines that lead you on a path of increasing your body’s vibrational levels, promoting a deep sense of inner peace and wholeness that already exists within us.
Reiki works with the universal life force energy and the human energy body, taking us on a journey through each vibrational level of being. Initially, many people come to Reiki seeking physical or emotional healing. We start our healing journey at the level of form – the physical things we can see - which consists of a lower vibrational frequency. As we raise our vibrational levels, we increase our intuition and awareness of who we really are. By continuing along the path and getting into higher vibrational levels, we recognize the oneness of all things and experience our interconnected nature.
The Reiki symbols and the Reiki principles beautifully align with this trajectory of increasing vibrational levels. The Power symbol and the first two principles align with the level of form. The Harmony symbol and next two principles align with the level of Spirit. And the Connection symbol and fifth principle align with the recognition of oneness and connection of all things.
Living by the Reiki principles can have a profound impact on your life. When we live in this way, we experience all manner of benefits in our lives, including:
1. Increased self-awareness and mindfulness
2. Greater emotional resilience, mental clarity, and ability to cope with stress
3. Improved relationships with ourselves and others
4. Increased sense of purpose and meaning in life
5. Greater sense of inner peace and harmony
6. Improved physical health and well-being and enhanced immune function
7. Increased energy levels and renewed sense of vitality
8. Increased intuition and spiritual awareness
9. Greater connection to the universe and all living beings
Living the principles allows you to have many of the same benefits as receiving Reiki treatments. Receiving Reiki is just a way to assist you in the process, as its energy naturally holds a high vibrational frequency that flows directly through your body during a session. However, living the principles is what will make the healing stick.
So why not give it a try and see what Reiki can do for you?
Reiki Principles in Everyday Life

Now that you understand the potential of living the Reiki principles, how exactly do you incorporate them into your daily life?
Meditation is a crucial aspect of Reiki practice, as it helps to calm the mind and promote inner peace. Through meditation, you can cultivate a deeper awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, which can help you to identify and release any negative energy that may be blocking your path to spiritual growth.
Journaling is another powerful tool that can be used in conjunction with Reiki meditation. By keeping a journal, you can record your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, which can help you to identify patterns and gain insights into your spiritual journey. Journaling can also help you to release negative emotions and gain clarity on your goals and intentions.
While Mikao Usui intended for his students to meditate on these principles twice a day and repeat them every morning and night, it's important to note that there is no "right" way to practice them. The key is to find what feels helpful and effective for you. This is about your journey.
To contemplate the principles, you can use them as a mantra, repeating each principle over and over and observing what arises for you. When reciting the principle, strive to repeat it from your heart, not just your mind. It's beneficial to connect with your body and notice what arises, rather than solely thinking about it. You can even place your hand over your heart while meditating as a reminder to come from the heart and stay present in the body.
During meditation, my original intention often transforms into a different process, or I end up journaling about something that surfaced. Sometimes I redirect my wandering mind back to my mantra, while other times I simply follow what feels important and let the process unfold naturally.
The aim is to repeat the principles enough to become familiar with them, so they naturally come to mind whenever a situation arises in your life where they are needed. In these moments, you will be reminded that you always have a choice in how you want to respond and who you want to be moving forward.
The Reiki principles are universal and will mean something different for everyone and also vary at different stages in one’s life. Take time to reflect on how you can bring each principle into your day-to-day life in a way that feels authentic and meaningful to you. You could focus on one principle per day or even for a stretch of days to see how it changes over time. The key is to make it a regular part of your daily routine and to approach it with an open heart and mind.
Next, we’ll look at some practical ways to incorporate each principle into your day-to-day life.
Just For Today…
First, I want to touch on the preface of each Reiki principle, "Just for Today." This is a reminder that there is no punishment or consequence for not following the principles. The worst that can happen for not following these principles is a negative life experience for you.
You are already whole and perfect, worthy and lovable exactly as you are, no matter what you do. Who you are is not what you do. There can be consequences for your actions, but it doesn't change your inherent worthiness.
"Just for today" invites you to practice compassion and self-love instead of beating yourself up and becoming self-critical when you fall short. When you inevitably forget your power and react in a way that may not serve you best, you get to start over.
Remember, the Reiki principles are a path of growth and increased vibrations and awareness. Every setback is an opportunity to increase your awareness. If you were able to follow these principles 24/7 without struggle or challenge, there would be no growth or awareness. This is what it’s all about. So, do not be hard on yourself about this!
Remember, the Reiki principles are meant to be helpful suggestions and positive guidance to support you on your path to greater peace and living a more meaningful life in a higher vibrational state. It's all about your experience here, and you always get to start again in each moment of your life. So, embrace the principles with an open heart and mind, and see how they can transform your life.
1. Do Not Anger
The principle of "Do Not Anger" encourages us to let go of anger-related emotions and cultivate a calm and balanced mind. By doing so, we free ourselves from unnecessary stress and negativity, allowing love and compassion to flow freely.
Anger is a powerful emotion that can be difficult to control and has us giving our power over to other people or situations. When we hold onto anger, we keep our vibration low and create blockages in our life. This prevents us from accessing higher vibrational states and can have a detrimental effect on our mental and emotional well-being. But when we consciously choose not to be angry, we create space for understanding, forgiveness, and empathy, allowing us to experience inner peace.
Living by this principle doesn't mean suppressing or denying our emotions. It means acknowledging our anger but choosing not to let it rule our actions and thoughts. It's about responding to challenging situations with patience and understanding and taking the time to process our feelings in a healthy manner.
As you reflect on this principle, take a moment to feel inside whether there exists any anger. If there's any anger there, work on forgiving or see what you can do about it and move on. When we respond to difficult situations with compassion and understanding, it opens up a multitude of new options. Let this principle be a gentle reminder to take a step back, take a deep breath, and address whether there's another way to deal with anger.
2. Do Not Worry
Worry is a common aspect of our everyday lives, but it does not help and can consume our thoughts and drain our energy. When we consciously choose not to worry, we open ourselves up to the possibility of living in the flow and trusting that everything is unfolding as it should.
Managing worry is not about suppressing or denying our concerns. It's about acknowledging them but not allowing them to control our thoughts and actions. Instead, we can choose to take proactive steps to address our concerns and trust that we have the inner strength and wisdom to overcome any challenges that come our way.
By embodying the principle of "Do Not Worry," we can peel away the layers of worry and uncover the root causes of our fears. This process of self-reflection allows us to grow and evolve, leading us to a place of greater understanding and peace.
As you focus on this principle, sit with it and ask yourself if you're worried. Work through your worries and prepare for them to the extent that you can, but also move into acceptance with the rest. If you are a Reiki practitioner, you can send Reiki directly to your worries and also give your worries over to Reiki. Practice relaxation techniques and focus on the present moment, trusting that everything will work out as it's meant to. Remember that worrying does not change anything, but positive thoughts and affirmations can bring positive energy and attract what you want in life.
3. Be Grateful.
The principle of "Be Grateful" can transform your life by opening yourself up to profound healing, appreciation for small joys, and a release from judgment and anger. Gratitude is like a magical elixir that can instantly shift your perspective and bring a sense of deep fulfillment and contentment.
When you cultivate gratitude in your daily life, you begin to notice the abundance that surrounds you. You start appreciating the simple pleasures, the kindness of others, and the beauty of each moment. By expressing gratitude, you open yourself up to receive even more blessings and positive energy from the universe.
This principle of gratitude also encourages compassion towards yourself and others. When you approach life with a grateful heart, you release judgment and anger, allowing for greater understanding and forgiveness. You develop a deeper sense of empathy and love for all beings.
As you focus on this principle of "Be Grateful," repeat the mantra, and take the time to really feel all the things you’re grateful for. Unlike anger and worry, gratitude carries a higher vibrational frequency. Challenge yourself to also look for the gratitude in life's difficulties and focus on what you learn through them.
4. Work with Diligence
The principle of "Work with Diligence" encourages us to approach our work with integrity and purpose, and to align our actions with our values. It reminds us that success should be measured by how aligned we are with our true purpose and how much positive impact we can have on others.
When we work diligently with authenticity, we raise our frequency and attract abundance in all areas of our life. As you focus on this principle, consider setting an intention for what you will be working towards and bring presence to your day, doing everything to the best of your ability.
Think about what you can be diligent about in your life and how you can show up as your authentic self in every situation. When you are presented with a challenge, imagine how the person you wish to be would show up in that situation and do your best to be that. This principle keeps you in higher vibrations as you remember your power in every situation. Work with diligence and watch as the universe conspires to support you on your incredible journey.
5. Be Kind to Others
The principle of "Be Kind to Others" reminds us to practice kindness and compassion towards all living beings, including animals, plants, and people. It's not just a nice gesture, but an essential aspect of healing and spiritual growth. This simple yet profound principle holds immense importance on our spiritual path and in our daily lives.
When we extend kindness to others, we contribute to their well-being and create a positive ripple effect in the world. Through acts of kindness, we also cultivate empathy and compassion, connecting us more deeply with others and nurturing our spiritual growth. Kindness is a true expression of connection, and when we are kind to others, we are also being kind to ourselves.
As you focus on this principle, reflect on the ways you offer kindness and become aware of moments where you may be holding back kindness. Are you offering your kindness across the board? Remember that another person's actions have nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Offering grace and compassion can help them connect with their own kindness.
Practicing kindness is a sacred gift we can offer in the moment, and it can be as simple as a smile, a kind word, or a small act of service. Let us embrace the power of kindness and allow it to touch the lives of those around us, contributing to their healing and growth while nurturing our own souls on this remarkable journey of life.
I hope this has given you a clearer understanding of the Reiki principles and the amazing power they hold. They are stepping stones on the path to truly knowing the wholeness of who we are and taking us out of living on autopilot. By embodying these principles, you can raise your consciousness and awareness and live a more fulfilling life.
Living in alignment with the Reiki principles can be challenging, but it is a journey worth taking. Remember that these principles are not just for Reiki practitioners but are for everyone who wants to live their best life. And if you are a practitioner, you have the added benefit of calling upon Reiki to guide and assist you through your day as you put each principle into practice.
So, take little pauses throughout your day and become more mindful of how you're showing up in each moment. Embrace the power of the Reiki principles and allow them to guide you on your journey towards wholeness and fulfillment.
