Benefits of Setting Monthly Goals

Monthly goals are your secret weapon to turn 'someday' into 'now'. A month is the sweet spot—short enough to keep the fire lit, yet long enough to see real results. These bite-sized victories are about to reshape your daily life.

Why set monthly goals? Let's dive in:

Gets You Off of Living on Auto-Pilot

If you’re not consciously creating the life you want, chances are you’re living on auto-pilot. Living without intention is like being stuck in a mental fog. Your brain craves efficiency, but at what cost? If you continue to operate this way, you will never create anything new or different in your life, just more of the same.

It's time to snap out of the comfort zone and steer the wheel. Monthly goals are your ticket to the present, disrupting the mundane routine and moving you towards a life you truly desire. Choose to live with purpose, not just by default.

Builds Confidence and Trust in Yourself

Ever bailed on a goal? You're not alone. It may seem innocent enough, but when you don’t follow through with what you set out to do, it can lead to a distrust in your own word. This can be a sneaky reason why you’re not following through with your goals. That distrust and self-doubt is often subconscious, quietly sabotaging your efforts without you even realizing it.

Take a moment to check if this may be playing a role in the background. Then consciously turn things around. By setting and achieving monthly goals, you rebuild that trust. Each success is a promise kept to yourself, boosting your confidence and ensuring your word means action.

Decreases Stress, Anxiety, and Overwhelm

Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm often come from holding too much in—whether it’s thoughts, feelings, or information. This creates blockages and an excess of energy in our bodies, widening the gap between where you currently are and where you want to be. This, of course, is the opposite of what you want to be doing.

The antidote to all of this is action. Setting monthly goals is your way of restoring balance and releasing built-up energy. As you start taking action and let things flow through you, instead of holding on, the overwhelm and stress can start to melt away, creating space for new information, growth, and healing.

Increases Your Vibrational Level

Ever noticed how some people just seem to attract awesomeness? You can be that magnetic. As you work towards your goal, you start to overcome and remove blockages. This allows your energy to flow freely which tunes up your vibrational frequency. It's a bit of science and a dash of the mystical. Higher vibrations mean greater alignment with the things you desire. Remember, you have to match the energy of your dreams to make them your reality.

Provides an Anchor Point

Life's storms can toss you around, but your monthly goal is your lighthouse. By focusing on your goals, you break free from the chains of past patterns and narratives. Instead of being swept away by life's currents, you choose to steer towards new horizons.

Monthly goals serve as your anchor, keeping you grounded and oriented even when things get hard. They help shift your attention from dwelling on past struggles to constructing a future filled with possibility. Setting these goals is a declaration to stop guarding your history and start building your destiny.

How to Set Monthly Goals

GPS with pins on start and end point

Let’s dive into mapping out your monthly goals with clarity and purpose. Think of it like programming your GPS before a big road trip. You've got to know your destination, your starting point, and the vehicle you're taking to get there.

I wish I had known to set goals this way a long time ago. See, my story is one of taking action—BIG actions even. I quit my job, left the country, took classes, got certifications, and tried LOTS of new things. While I appreciate the journey that brought me to where I am today, I still wonder where I could’ve been if I had approached things differently. If I had taken the time to clarify where I wanted to be first, my experience would have been entirely different, and likely with a lot less struggle.

So, as we dive into mapping out your monthly goals, let's use my journey as a lesson. First things first, know where you’re going!

Your End Point

Imagine knowing exactly where you want to land and why. Setting an intention is key to getting this. I want you to envision your life's ultimate outcome. Picture what it looks like and feels like. Consider any long-term goals you have, your personal values, and purpose.

Take a moment to write down these intentions. This clarity helps prioritize what matters most. They will act as a compass, ensuring your monthly goals align with your inner truth and guiding you toward meaningful progress. Having an intention is what will start turning your dreams into reality.

Your Start Point

Knowing where you're at now is key to reaching where you want to be. Take a moment to acknowledge your current reality and gain insight into what may be holding you back.

Willpower and the Inner Struggle

Consider the internal battles that may have kept you from your goals in the past and face them head-on. Recognize the habits that are keeping you from your life’s vision you identified above. It's not just about setting goals; it's about starting from a place of self-awareness. Without this, you may find yourself relying solely on willpower, turning your journey into an unnecessary struggle.

Imagine trying to set off on a journey without allowing your GPS to determine your current location. It would be disorienting and inefficient. Similarly, understanding your starting point is the key to a smooth and direct route to living that outcome you’re after.

Checking in on Your Beliefs

Belief in your own ability to achieve your goals is essential. If you set goals but are doubting yourself, you're undermining your efforts from the start. Remember, the law of attraction is always at work: your thoughts will manifest your results. This includes thoughts and beliefs that are so deeply ingrained that they operate beyond your conscious awareness.

It's time for a belief check-in. It's one thing to say you believe in yourself; it's another to truly feel it. Are there doubts lurking beneath the surface? Identify and confront them. This step is crucial in moving toward your goals with certainty and self-assuredness. You must not only believe in your potential but also embrace the conviction that you are capable, regardless of what has happened in the past.

Choose Your Vehicle

Your goal is your vehicle that will drive you from your start point to your end point. Just as it doesn’t truly matter which vehicle you select to reach your destination, the specific goal isn’t that critical either.

It’s not the diet, healthy body, better relationship, new job or habit that transforms you; rather, it’s the person you become in the pursuit of it.  Achieving the goal is simply the icing on the cake.

Pick one goal and give it your full focus. Even if you have multiple things you want to accomplish, tackle them one at a time. As you progress toward this goal, expect positive changes in other areas of your life too.

Don't overthink it; the key is to start moving.

Picking the Best Monthly Goal for You

If you already have one in mind—Great, go for that! If you're still searching, here are some strategies to help you pinpoint a goal that resonates with you:

Aligning Daily Actions with Future Intentions

Begin by considering the end point you've envisioned for yourself. What daily habits can you cultivate that will bring you closer to this vision? Your goal could be to establish these small, consistent practices that incrementally build the life you desire.

Try completing this sentence to uncover these habits: “I feel <desired result> when I <activity>.” Jot down as many activities as possible that lead to your desired result, then select one to turn into a daily habit.

For instance, if your life’s ultimate outcome is to have inner peace, you might say: "I feel inner peace when I meditate, nourish my body with healthy food, am present with the people around me, or engage in self-care." Pick one of these activities, plan how to integrate it into your daily routine, and consciously connect it to your pursuit of inner peace each time you do it.

Identify Areas for Growth or Improvement

Reflect on the different areas of your life—physical health, emotional well-being, career, finances, relationships, home environment, joy, recreation, spirituality, and more. Rate your satisfaction in each area on a scale from 1 to 10. Which area scores the lowest? Set a goal to elevate that number.

You could also link this back to the broader intention you've set. For example, if you're aiming for inner peace but find yourself frequently upset with your children, dissatisfied with your job, or continually reaching for food or a drink at the end of a long day, consider goals that address these specific challenges. Whether it's practicing patience, seeking career fulfillment, or allowing for your emotions, let this be your focus.

Visualizing Your Future Self

Close your eyes. Envision the life of your future self. What does your environment around you look like? Who are the people in your life? What’s your daily routine—are you moving your body, what are you eating? How are you showing up?

How does this differ from your current reality? Identify one aspect of your life that doesn't align with this vision and set a goal to adjust it.

For example, if your future self has a serene and organized living space, but your current environment is cluttered, your goal might be to declutter and organize your home. Start to live into that future.

After pinpointing your goal, solidify it by writing it down: By <date-one month from now>, I will have achieved <specific goal>. I'll know I've succeeded because <finish the sentence>.

Add The Fuel!

Your 'why' is the fuel that powers your pursuit. It may be aligned with the end point you’ve identified, but instead of being linked to your overall life outcome, your ‘why’ is connected to the specific goal you’ve chosen.

Just as a vehicle can't reach its destination without fuel, your goal may struggle to lead to the desired result without a clear 'why'. It's much easier to give up on a goal when you're unclear about why you want to achieve it.

Understand why you want this change and what you believe awaits you on the other side. Get crystal clear on your motivations and let them drive you forward. When obstacles arise, as they inevitably will, your 'why' will anchor you, keeping you focused and resilient.

When considering your 'why', remember that it's not about fixing yourself or proving your worth. You are already enough. Ensure that your 'why' is based on enhancing your life, not on a sense of lack. For example, if you aim to change your career, ensure it's for growth or impact, not to seek validation or respect.

Once you have your 'why', write it down. Remind yourself of it often, especially during challenging times. This is your journey, and your monthly goals are the steps you take. Stay true, stay motivated, and let's make this month count!

The Monthly Goal Mindset

To truly harness the power of monthly goals, you must be laser-focused on personal growth, ready to embrace change, and committed to your path even when setbacks arise.

Let's face it, when it comes to the goals we set, negative emotions are often already present, lurking just beneath the surface. If you don't manage these head-on, they'll sabotage your progress. You'll either stall or never start. That's why mastering the Monthly Goal Mindset is key to your success.

We’ve already touched on self-doubt, but take a look at these other emotional hurdles that may also be subconsciously playing in the background.

Make Sure You're Ready for Change

This one is so HUGE! You set a goal, you’re excited about the thought of achieving it. You WANT the results, but are you prepared for the change that will come with it? Are you truly ready? Many people think they are, but upon deeper reflection, they may find areas where they are not fully prepared.

Facing the fear of success can be as daunting as the fear of failure. Understand that your brain is hardwired to resist change because it signals the unknown. Yet, embracing change is essential for progress.

Ask yourself these questions to gauge your readiness:

  • Am I willing to step out of my comfort zone?
  • Can I commit to the additional effort required to make a change?
  • Have I accepted the person I'll become once I reach my goal?

Until you decide that you’re ready, it will be another battle of willpower. But once your brain is on board, the results you're after will start to take shape.

Check in on Any Expectations

Pursuing your goals can be exciting, but it’s not always a smooth ride. Expect bumps along the road and remember why you started when motivation dips. Your 'why' serves as the compass that guides you through the foggy days.

When facing emotional turbulence, here's what to do:

  • Embrace discomfort; it's a sign of growth.
  • Celebrate the small victories, however minuscule.
  • Allow for your emotions and lean into them with compassion and curiosity.

Remember, embracing change means staying switched on, and yes, it can feel mentally exhausting at first. You might feel like your mind is engaged in a non-stop dialogue, questioning every thought and emotion. But stick with it. With dedication, you'll soon be able to process these thoughts quickly, shift your energy, and step back into the flow as the master creator of your life.

Commitment and Failure

It's time to be real with yourself. If you've set goals in the past that you didn't achieve, it's likely because you didn’t fully commit. True commitment means being all-in, even when the path is rocky. It’s also about not giving into excuses and consciously deciding ahead of time that whatever goal you have set, was 100% the right choice.

Think of your commitment like an unbreakable bond:

  • Close the doors to alternatives; focus solely on your chosen path.
  • Expect failures and view them as an essential part of the path to success; they are lessons, not setbacks.
  • Channel the emotion of commitment. Recall the times you've succeeded due to your dedication and use those memories to fuel your current efforts.

When roadblocks appear, don't retreat. Instead, reinforce your resolve. Turn each failure into a lesson, creating a stronger, more adept you. Realize that quitting is the only real defeat. Stay committed and you will inevitably achieve your goals.

If you find that any of these emotional hurdles are in the way, make mastering them your initial goal, or stay mindful of them as you work toward your identified goal. Recognize when they arise and consciously redirect yourself to get back on track. Your goals are within reach—commit, learn, and grow.

Take Meaningful Action Towards Your Monthly Goals

Now, I’m all about taking action here. But let's not confuse busywork with progress. We're aiming for the kind of action that propels you forward, the steps that truly count.

You're not just crossing tasks off a list or setting goals for the sake of it. You're on a mission to bridge the gap between your current reality and where you want to be.

Setting goals is a conscious effort—it's about recognizing where you've been holding back and breaking through those barriers. It's about clarity, understanding exactly where you stand, where you're headed, and why that destination matters to you. This isn't just about setting goals; it's about taking meaningful action.

We’ve tackled the tough stuff, the groundwork that's so often overlooked. Now, with that solid foundation, every step you take will be packed with purpose.

Remember, monthly goals are your stepping stones. They're the strategic moves that connect your long-term vision to your day-to-day life. To turn your dreams into something you can touch, see, and celebrate, you need a clear, actionable plan that breaks down your journey into achievable chunks. Now's the time to get on the road and start driving to your destination. Let's get moving!

Breaking Down Goals Into Manageable Tasks

List the specific tasks needed to achieve your identified goal. Consider what you need to accomplish your goal and detail every action required. If you aim to reduce stress in your life, list practices like meditation, daily exercise, or journaling that can help you achieve a calmer state. By turning each goal into bite-size pieces, the pathway to accomplishment becomes visible and less intimidating.

Obstacles and Strategies

Expect and plan for challenges. Recognize distraction habits and replace them with goal-oriented activities. Combat negative self-talk by focusing on empowering thoughts. Be proactive in choosing how you show up in life and remember your power in these moments. Anticipating obstacles allows you to develop strategies to overcome them and maintain progress toward your goals.

Setting Deadlines for Each Task

Deadlines are non-negotiable. Take your list and put each task onto your calendar. Make sure not to overload your time and consider what is realistically possible for you to complete each day. Once every task is on the calendar for the month, you don’t need your list anymore! Now all you have to do is take it one day at time, complete what you planned for yourself that day, and your goal is as good as done! Respecting deadlines builds up that trust in yourself that you will follow through on the commitments you tell yourself and ensures that you stay on track.

Daily Reflection

Reflect on your actions every day to ensure alignment with your goals. Each day, pause and ponder your journey:

  • How did your actions today bring you closer to where you want to be?
  • What feelings pushed you forward or held you back?

Set an intention each morning. Call on it to guide your thoughts, words, and actions throughout the day.

Building Awareness

Stay conscious as often as possible while working towards your goal. Observe your actions and mindset. Are they in sync with the result you're after? Be intentional in generating the necessary emotions to drive action, such as commitment, determination, excitement, or empowerment.

Try to find trigger points that remind you to stop and look inward. Are there certain things you do to distract yourself? Take the time to find out why. What’s behind that? Try to notice behavior or thought patterns that are holding you back. Challenge them. Rewrite your inner script to flip the narrative. Let go of old stories of setbacks and rewrite that story so you can live from your future.

Living From Your Future

Imagine yourself having already achieved your monthly goals. Visualize how this version of you would navigate the daily challenges. Walk in their footsteps, allowing your future self to guide your present decisions. When obstacles arise, take a breath and consider how the future you would handle them.

If negative emotions creep in, question whether feeling that way will help you progress. If they don't contribute to your journey, it's time to let them go. Recognize the emotion, deactivate it, and realign with the version of yourself that has overcome these very challenges.

Practicing Compassion

Self-criticism can be a hard habit to break, but it's essential to replace it with self-compassion. Be gentle with yourself, acknowledging that every misstep is part of the learning curve. Affirm your value and the significance of your journey with positive reinforcement.

When things start to feel heavy or serious, use this as a signal to turn on the compassion and curiosity. Understand that your brain is trying to protect you, but also know that you have the power to explore these protective instincts. Allow yourself to fully experience your feelings, then consciously decide if you want to shift it and reorient to where you’re going.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the deeper reasons behind your emotions, meet them with kindness, and continuously adjust your energy towards your aspirations. With persistence, you'll witness the changes you're striving for.

Tracking Progress and Making Adjustments as Needed

It’s super important to track your progress, as this brings clarity to what’s working and what needs tweaking. Use your calendar or planner to monitor your daily and weekly steps toward your monthly goals. If you find yourself procrastinating or veering off course, reassess and realign your actions without self-judgment.

Before taking action on your goal, take note of where you’re at today. This will be your baseline to see how much you’ve grown. Track your emotions and where you are in relation to your goal as you move forward.

Then, at the end of the month, determine whether you want to extend the time and continue your progress along the same goal, or perhaps start something new. Notice how working towards this goal has had a ripple effect on other aspects of your life. Celebrate the person you’re becoming.

In Short…

Setting Your 30-Day Goal:

  • Know Your Destination: Define the life you want.
  • Assess Your Present: Acknowledge where you're starting from.
  • Choose a Focus: Select one goal for the next 30 days.

  • Commitment Reminder: Reaffirm your goal each day.
  • Belief Check-in: Believe in your ability to succeed.

If you don't know where you want to end up, where you're starting from, or how to get your mind in the right place, your goal might stay just a dream. But if you take the time to work these things out and then take meaningful action on them, that's when you'll start to see your dreams transform into your reality!
